Our reproduction is directly based on an original helmet that has been found in a 10th-century Slavic-Varangian settlement named Gnezdovo or Gnyozdovo near Smolensk in modern-day Russia. As many typically Scandinavian artefacts have been found at the same time as the helmet it makes it a nice choice for anyone wanting to reenact an eastern Viking / Varangian / Russ / Slav character. On the other hand, such a helmet would seem far less appropriate if you’re portraying a western Viking raiding England for example.
This beautiful Gnezdovo helmet is HANDMADE from 16-gauge mild steel, lined with a comfortable and secure leather liner and a sturdy butted mail aventail. A circumference of approximately 68 cm makes it fit almost all head sizes. And a sturdy chin strap closed with a lovely buckle will help keep your helmet in place during all your battles. Note: This product is carefully coated with a layer of oil when packaged that acts as a temporary (protective) layer against corrosion (rust), which can easily be wiped off using any oil remover or even a dry cloth.
